Guillard vs. Miller on FX

Guillard and Miller at the weigh-ins

Tonight marks the UFCs first ever card on FX. I expect some fireworks in the main event between lightweights Melvin “The Young Assassin” Guillard and Jim Miller. Both men suffered some tough losses in their last outings.

In Guillard’s case he came out overconfident against Joe Lauzon. I think confidence turned into cockiness when he began bouncing around with a smile and his hands down. I don’t think he had any idea what happened next until after he’d watched the replay. Lauzon tagged him right on the chin with a jab and swarmed with a rear naked choke.

Jim Miller took some serious ground and pound from Ben Henderson. Miller tried for all kinds of submissions, but Henderson seems to be able to handle every bad situation he’s put in. At times Miller sacrificed the chance for a dominant position in order to try for a submission, and it cost him.

The story line going into this fight is Guillard’s ability to keep himself mentally composed in the octagon, and also all of his losses coming by submission. Both of these aspects will come into play against Miller who is no slouch on the ground and who is always someone who brings the fight.

Guillard does possess quick and powerful hands and has been known to drop guys from blows to the body. He is certainly a powerful athlete, but I think Miller is going to close the distance and bring the pressure.

I think Miller will wear Guillard out in the clinch before taking the fight to the floor and submitting him. Despite Miller’s previous loss I think a win tonight has him fighting for the title next.

Steven Gadman is picking Miller by second round submission.
